The two-day 2012 Pacific Northwest convention on Mercer Island was a blast (rumor has it Bill Gates came by on Saturday to ask us to "please keep it down so a regular guy can get a nap on his day off").

On Saturday morning Karen, David, and Erika gave a great school on leading, and posted a Leading Lesson Booklet and three audio files that you can refer to: Segment 1Segment 2Segment 3.

Wow, very helpful resources, right? Best to follow that up while it's fresh in your mind with additional in-person guidance and practice: This Sunday Marie and Betsy will lead a school on leading, here in Portland at The Kennedy School, from 3-4pm, which will be followed with regular singing from 4-6pm. Whatcha gonna lead?

2012
Katy got 2012 off on the right note with her January singing school on New Year's resolutions.

Here's her right-up, write-up - a valuable addition to our growing treasure trove of singing school notes, and one that I hope we'll revisit at this time next year.

Last weekend (Jan 14-15, 2012) more than a dozen Portland singers and many more from the greater Northwest made the trip to San Carlos to join singers from as far away as Poland for the 24th Annual All-California convention. Our goodwill was repaid many times over with their generosity, good food, and some truly memorable singing.

I wholeheartedly recommend traveling to sing with others. Lots of opportunities are coming soon to a hollow square near you

Jessica (the alto) says:

"We have again been asked to lead a Sacred Harp singing at the Portland Old Time Music Gathering on January 14."

According to their schedule, it looks like they have us in the big auditorium at Norse Hall at the Scottish Rite Center, at 1512 SW Morrison, teaching a class from 12:30-1pm, and singing as usual from 1-2:30pm.

It's always a great time!

Find out why all the cool kids (like Connie) are so excited about the Cooper book! Ring in the New Year this Sunday from 2-4pm at Waverly Heights. Here's Nettie (380t), sung in Austin, TX, with friend-of-Portland Tamara Harris in the treble section:

At one of last year's Kennedy School singings we agreed to be recorded singing 282 - the result can be heard here, at about the 6:50 mark - but watch from the begining to get the full effect!

Sun, 11 Dec 2011 20:13:00 -0800 With your help, we'll have complete details for every 1991 Sacred Harp tune http://portlandsacredharp.org/with-your-help-well-have-complete-details-of http://portlandsacredharp.org/with-your-help-well-have-complete-details-of

Google-docs-icon

Portland singer Anna Stoerch has shared her pet project with the world: compiling complete details for every tune in the 1991 revision of The Sacred Harp tunebook.

Entering author, composer, time signature, and so on for every tune would take one person a long time, but with everyone's help, it'll be done before you can say "Lord Revive Us".

When the data's ready, we'll create a form that will let you search the collection to find all the minor songs...in 2/4...that were written between 1950 and 2000...that contain major chords...it'll be a Great Day indeed!

So take a couple minutes, open your book, and do some data entry for the benefit of singers everywhere - then enter your comments on sheet 2, add yourself as a contributor on sheet 3, and tell all your friends!

Wed, 30 Nov 2011 11:57:00 -0800 What are you practicing at home? http://portlandsacredharp.org/what-are-you-practicing-at-home http://portlandsacredharp.org/what-are-you-practicing-at-home

Here are the three I've been working on:

42 Clamanda
Tune: Unknown
Words: Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, 1814
Meter: Long Meter Double (8,8,8,8,8,8,8,8)
Say, now ye lovely social band,
Who walk the way to Canaan’s land;
Ye who have fled from Sodom’s plain,
Say do you wish to turn again?

Oh have you ventured to the field,
Well armed with helmet, sword and shield?
And shall the world, with dread alarms,
Compel you now to ground your arms?

Tune: Lucius Chapin, 1813
Words: Charles Wesley, 1742
Meter: Long Particular Meter (8,8,8,8,8,8)
Come, Oh Thou traveler unknown,
Whom still I hold, but cannot see;
My company before is gone,
And I am left alone with Thee.
With Thee all night I mean to stay,
And wrestle till the break of day.

In vain Thou strugglest to get free,
I never will unloose my hold;
Art Thou the Man that died for me?
The secret of Thy love unfold.
Wrestling, I will not let Thee go,
Till I Thy name, Thy nature know.

Tune: William Billings, 1770
Words: Isaac Watts, 1719
Meter: Common Meter Double (8,6,8,6,8,6,8,6)
Lord, in the morning Thou shalt hear
My voice ascending high:
To Thee will I direct my prayer,
To Thee lift up mine eye;
Up to the hills where Christ is gone
To plead for all His saints,
Presenting at His Father’s throne
Our songs and our complaints.

Thou art a God before whose sight
The wicked shall not stand;
Sinners shall ne’er be Thy delight,
Nor dwell at Thy right hand,
But to Thy house will I resort,
To taste Thy mercies there;
Thy word into our minds instill;
And worship in Thy fear.

Lone-fir-cemetery-halloween-2011

This year some of us participated in the Tour of Untimely Departures at the Lone Fir Cemetery. The evening was cold and crisp, but thankfully dry - hot drinks and wraps kept the cold at bay. As the dark decended, we had to squint to make out the leader, and lean in close to hear the other parts, but afterwards the neighboring docents, who were telling stories to the crowds, complained that it was difficult to be heard over our vigorous racket!

Here we have the dessert table, the Chair, Lyle Linsdey, addressing the singers, and some nice shots of Elene Stovall of Birmingham, Alabama, who taught this year's singing school.
